Today it is our 12th day in Mexico.
After spending two days in Cancun (it didn't really feel like in Mexico there), we went to Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatan. We stayed in a beautiful hotel in the center of the city, the colonial hystorical building dating back to 1840. It was a great idea to be in Merida at the end of the week: on weekend evenings there is live music outside, the streets around the main Plaza are closed to traffic and there are small cultural events happening. On Saturday night we danced salsa on the street... we still remember how to do it! :) It was so much fun.
On Sunday we had an excursion to the Mayan ruins of Uxmal and Kabah. We were quite impressed by the good condition and beauty of the pyramids built by the Maya civilization more than one thousand years ago.
On Monday we went to Chichen Itza to see the famous Kukulcan Pyramid (El Castillo) - one of the new seven wonders of the world! Kukulcan's pyramid is notable for the fact that at the spring and fall equinoxes (March 21 and September 22) the sun projects such a pattern of light on the northern stairway that one gets an impression of a massive serpent snaking down the structure. Chichen Itza has the most famous Mayan ruins in Yucatan and is the second most visited archeological site in Mexico (the first one is situated near Mexico city). Very interesting, but also very crowded and in the end of the excursion our shoes became unbelievably dusty...
On the same day we continued our trip to Playa del Carmen where we are staying now. It's a very nice city, but the weather is not really welcoming here these days. It rained every day, so we even didn't try to swim here. Instead, we biked every day to the center of the city (five days in a row), were walking around there and found 3 Starbucks shops... that was our highlight... Well, fortunately we had enough of the beach last month in the Cook Islands ;)
Hasta pronto!

Oxana & Jerome :
In Mexico we traveled by bus and we like it. The bus is the best alternative: comfortable and not expensive.
In August it can be very warm in Mexico and you may expect hurricanes in Yucatan. Tropical hurricane season on the Atlantic basin runs from June till the end of November.
We didn't go to Mexico city though!
