Franz Jozef Glacier

After arriving in the city of Franz Jozef Glacier, we were sitting in the popular "Landing Cafe". Apparently the cafe got its name because helicopters kept on landing (and taking off as well) very close to it. Inspired by all this scenary, we were eager to heli-hike on Franz Jozef Glacier. Heli-hiking would let us combine a scenic helicopter flight with walking on the ice for a couple of hours. We made a booking for the next day (10 December); however our heli-hiking activity was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
Still we chose to do a five-hours-long hiking on the glacier.
We were asked to wear 3-4 layers of our own clothes; besides we were kitted out with special boots, crampons and jackets. By the way, wearing jeans for glacier walks is strongly NOT recommended. Jeans would definitely get wet, they don't dry fast; and we suspect that you don't want to wear wet jeans for several hours. So we were wearing our summer shorts.
Surprisingly enough, it was not cold near the glacier (around +12 C). We got quite warm while walking and very soon we started taking off some layers of clothes.
Now imagine us walking up and down the glacier like raindeers... :)
