We are in the Cook Islands!
On Sunday evening (21st December) we took a flight from Auckland to Rarotonga. We passed the international date line and as a result we arrived in Raroronga a day earlier, which was Saturday evening (20th December). So we gained one day!
We had a pick up from the airport and got into our room at night. Early in the morning (around 6 AM) we were woken up by a bunch of singing roosters! The local wild life was glad to see us: we were greeted by local friendly cats, dogs, roosters/chickens, salamanders etc. On the night of arrival we had to catch one cat and put it outside of our room. It is normal here to see chickens walking near some shops/ cafes in the city. Now we live in the "Rarotonga Backpackers" situated just on the beach; our beach-front bungalow is about 15 meters walk to the ocean. And the view from our room terrace is to die for - so beautiful!!!
We rented a scooter for five days. Jerome had to go through a driving test today to get a local driving license (NZ$25). We have had a fun ride around the island already - it takes about 40 minutes to ride around Rarotonga.
It's a pity that there are many sharp stones on the beach near our bungalow and the water is shallow, so we haven't had a swim yet. There should be some beaches with better walking and swimming possibilities and we are going to find them soon. The priority was to find an Internet cafe first :)
