On Thursday we went hiking in Waimangu Volcanic Valley which is a home of the Frying Pan Lake. We were walking along the Crater walkways and going down to the lake Rotomahana.
Today we headed to Hells Gate Thermal Reserve, the area’s most active geothermal park, with hot pools, geysers and mud volcanoes. It is a little scary place! It's known as Hells Gate because about hundred years ago the famous George Bernard Shaw visited the area and decided that this must be the gateway to Hell. Here one can see boiling black mud (over 145 degrees C) erupting and shooting up over three metres into the air! We wandered here past boiling lakes, bubbling mud and hot waterfalls, taking pictures of the steaming sights... Next on the agenda was our own mud bath. That mud is said to detoxify the system. So two of us were sitting in a hot & curative Mud Bath (each mud bath is big enough for two) for 20 minutes. After a mercifully cold shower we move on to a sulphur bath pool – also fantastically hot and stinky!
The plan for this Sunday is to drive to Auckland and then fly to the Cook Islands...

Mooie foto's! Ik kan me de lucht nog wel herinneren. Mooi land, dat Aotearoa!
